How do we protect our lungs against infections?

After a glorious summer, the nights are starting to get a little chillier and a little longer.

Autumn is primed for coughing, flu and colds. So the lungs are what we need to protect, especially for the elderly. In Chinese Medicine, the nose is the door to the lungs and we protect the nose through a) massages to stimulate the body's natural defense, b) regular cleaning to remove irritants, c) herbal supplements and diet, d) exercise. We will show you how:

Nose Massage

  1. Rub your thumbs together until they are warm.

  2. Massage using your thumbs on either side of your nose up and down 30 times.

  3. Press the acupoints at either side of your nostrils 15 times.

  4. Repeat twice a day.

Nose Cleaning Exercise

  1. Hold your breath and dip your nose into cold water hold for 15 seconds.

  2. Take your nose out of the water and repeat for 5-10 times.

Diet

Vegetables and fruits that are good for lungs include: mooli, lotus roots, yam, lily, white fungus, lotus seeds, ginseng fruit and pears. We have a lot of these supplements at our clinic Dr Nature, 22 St Thomas Street.

Exercise

Walks in forests are especially good for the lungs. The air is freshest between 3am and 5am and so we would recommend early morning exercises.

We wish you luck in keeping healthy.
